Monthly Message for October 2011

Hi Folks,

This is a long message, filled with lots of information.  Please read to the end.

The month of October was filled with activities for our club members!

The monthly Bike Night was held on the 4th at Triumph Grill.  This was election night.  The officers and their positions are as follows:

  • Chief Contact Person and President: Gary Kwawer
  • Vice President: Mark Schomaker
  • Treasurer/Secretary: Bob Oesch
  • Ride Captain: Vito Sicola

I appreciate the efforts put forth by the above officers and look forward to another great year.

The monthly group ride was held on the 8th so the ending could be at Motorrad St. Louis, the site of our annual family barbeque.  George Saunders Jr., the owner of Motorrad, hosted the event.  His mother and father were integral parts of the operation and made certain that all of our members had a great time.  Photos of the event are on the website.  We had new members, old members, and family members at the event.  Food was plentiful.  There were attendance prizes as well as a contest to identify certain mysterious motorcycle parts.  The winner of the contest was Frank Simo.  We started at noon, and the last people departed after 3:30PM.  The next generation of Ducati riders represented by the children of Nichola Bica, Mike Kirkton, Chuck Howell, and James Meneely.  Many spouses were also present.  All had a good time.

On Sunday the 9th, members of GDOG participated in the Columbus Day Parade in the Hill neighborhood of St. Louis.  The Grand Marshall and Parade Queen had many photos taken near our machines.  During the parade, progress was very slow.  Most of us had motorcycles getting very warm and the riders had very sore left hands and wrists from working the clutch.  The Ducatis in the parade excited the crowd lining the streets.  Vito and Rio entertained them.   By the time we reached the end of the route, all of us were ready to park the bikes.  The Ducatis in the park were a big hit with the celebrants in the park.  All in all, it was a good way to promote the Ducati brand to the St. Louis Italian community.  Raymond So provided the photographs that are posted on the website.

This brings me some important business for the end of this year and all of next year.  Our next bike night is Tuesday, November 1 at Triumph Grill at 6:30PM.  During our brief business meeting we be briefed on the November 5 ride which is being led by Raymond So.  We shall discuss the upcoming year and plans for track days and other items.  Administrative items will also be discussed.  Also, we shall discuss the web efforts that we currently use and where are efforts should be focused for the future.

This brings us to the topic of membership.  Currently and for next year, dues are $20.00 per year.  The question that I am often asked is what do I get for my $20?  Well, we now have some answers.

  1. A membership card identifying you as a member of the Gateway Ducati Owners Group
  2. Active Status and the privilege of voting for officers and holding an officer position
  3. A Gateway Ducati Owners Group T-shirt, which should be arriving shortly;
  4. The following benefit from our sponsoring dealership that I received in an email and am now quoting directly from the email:  Pete Hall wrote,  “We have decided on a 10% discount for all current paid card carrying Gateway Ducati Owners Club members for everything except labor, tires, and motorcycles. All apparel accessories and hard parts other than tires will receive a 10% discount for current members. Also we have the lounge area upstairs with couch and TV as well as the chairs downstairs and the Grill area for members to congregate. If members would like to watch a specific race or channel we have available or if they would like to bring in a DVD we would be glad to play it for them assuming the content is reasonably appropriate.”
  5. The opportunity and engage in wonderful dialogue with fellow Ducatistas in a pleasant environment;
  6. Opportunities at MotoGP and World Superbike races to have access that the general public does not have.

In my opinion, item 5 is reason enough to be an active member.  The other items are just icing on the cake.

So, please pay your dues for 2012 so we can continue to build a strong and vibrant Ducati community in the St. Louis area.

Finally, we have the Annual Holiday Party on December 6, 2011 at 6:30PM.  A special 3-course dinner will be prepared for a cost of $25.00 per person.  Spouses are encouraged to attend.  My wife will be there and I plan on availing myself of the gift registry as a hint for the holidays.  Please RSVP to me, if you haven’t already, at president@gatewayducati.com.  We need to get a firm count for the restaurant.
I believe most of the items have been covered.

See you at the meeting on the 1st!

Sincerely,
Gary Kwawer
Chief Contact Person and President
Gateway Ducati Owners Group
